Graeme Shaw

Graeme Shaw paintings are the product of decades long technical and artistic journey. Work arriving in galleries now come by way of a very specific multimedia process most often employing some 11 discrete steps. Only very specific kinds of mediums, paints and most importantly, brushes, are used.

Every step of this approach and knowledge of materials to used, has been hard won through years of experimentation, trial and error.

In his development he has found reliance on memory or quick field sketches a much better way to reach his artistic goals than painting on site or employing photographic references. His imagery is most often a creative collaboration of impression and feeling rather than a technically accurate study of a specific place.

Shaw was born in Calgary but has lived and worked across western Canada and also in the south western arctic. His imagery most often reflects impressions from these regions.
